Michigan State heads to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championships this weekend.Â
The Indianapolis Rowing Center will once again be the host venue for the Championships. The eight-lane course on Eagle Creek Reservoir has hosted Olympic Trials, National Championships, and major regattas for decades. The venue has been the host for Big Tens in all but two years since 2011 – there was no event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Devils Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin was the host site in 2024. Prior to 2011, the  annual championships rotated among Big Ten schools, with Michigan State hosting the final campus-site championship on Lake Ovid in Laingsburg in 2010.
Â
Saturday heats begin at 9 am, with racing contested in 12-minute centers. The NCAA boats begin their heats at 10:38 am; there will be two heats for each of varsity fours, followed by the second varsity eights and finishing with the varsity eight heats at 11:26 and 11:38. The early-morning racing will feature third (novice) and fourth eights as well as second and third fours.   The top three finishers from each Saturday heat will advance to the Grand Finals on Sunday, while the remaining five boats will compete in the Petite Finals. Michigan State will send six entries to Indy (the Spartans will not field a fourth varsity eight.)
Â
Saturday heats will have a live webstream on B1G+, and Sunday's finals will air live on Big Ten Network. Dean Linke, Grace Latz, and Mandi Kowal will call the action.Â
Â
Sunday's championship races also begin at 9:02 am, alternating Petite Finals and Grand Finals in each boat class. Racing begins with the fourth and third (novice) eights, followed by the third and second fours. The varsity fours go off at 10:38 and 10:50 am, the second varsity eight at 11:02 and 11:14, with the varsity eights at 11:26 and 11:38.  Sunday's award ceremony for medaling crews will be at 12:15 pm.Â
Â
Under third-year coach Stacey Rippetoe and her staff, the Spartans have demonstrated considerable improvement in each year of her tenure. Last year, MSU's varsity eight finished fifth in an expanded Big Ten (with the addition of Washington, UCLA, and Southern Cal for 2024-25, the Big Ten now boasts 11 rowing programs). The fifth-place finish was MSU's highest in the varsity eight boat since 2014.Â
Â
Big Ten crews hold five spots in the CRCA/Pocock National Top 25 Poll entering the weekend: No. 4 Washington, No. 12 Rutgers, No. 16 Ohio State, No. 17 Michigan, and No. 18 UCLA. The crews have already seen each other in action as well – the Big Ten Rowing Invitational on April 17-18 had all 11 B1G crews along with No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Cal, and No. 20 Oregon State among the eight invited schools. One focus for the Spartans will be continuing to close margins from that regatta as well as its other races.  MSU last raced at the Dale England Cup at Indiana on May 2 – and had significantly better results from when it faced the Hoosiers in the final session of the Big Ten Invitational.  Â
Â
MSU's lineups for each of its entries will be available on Friday.   Â
