MSU men’s tennis loses on another road trip game.
BOISE, Idaho – Michigan State men's tennis fell to Boise State, in a hard-fought road battle, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.
Sunday was MSU's fifth-straight match away from home, including its fourth true road match in a row.
With ITA Rankings being released earlier in the week and freshman Matthew Forbes winning Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, the Spartans were looking forward to proving themselves, after the team dropped six spots in ITA team rankings.
The Spartans switched up their doubles pairings with sophomore Taym Alazmeh/freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev at the No. 1 spot, with the brother duo senior Max Sheldon/freshman Mitchell Sheldon at number two and freshman Matthew Forbes/Vuk Radjenovic in the final spot for the Spartans doubles pairings.
Ma. Sheldon/Mi. Sheldon took on Kurata/Seifert from Boise State. The brother duo quickly took down the pairing from BSU, bringing the team closer to the doubles point.
On the next court over, Forbes/Radjenovic went up against Chin/Van Herseele of Boise State. The Spartan duo fought hard but fell, 6-4.
With the split in sets, the Spartans were looking to Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev to win their match and grab the doubles point for the team.
Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev took Middleton/Baker from Boise State to a hard-earned tiebreaker. The Spartan duo defeated Middleton/Baker, 7-6 (7-4).
With the doubles point in favor of the Spartans, the team went on to their singles matches.
Alazmeh was the first Spartan to complete their singles match at No. 4 singles. Lukas Seifert (BSU) defeated Alazmeh 6-3, 6-4.
No. 61 Ma. Sheldon secured a victory at No. 1 singles over Jett Middleton (BSU) with a straight-set win, finishing 7-5, 6-3.
Mi. Sheldon fought hard after a dominant first set at No. 6 singles, but James Van Herseele (BSU) mounted a comeback to take the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the No. 5 singles spot, Rakhmatullayev battled back after a tough first-set tiebreak loss to defeat John Chin (BSU), 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, 6-2.
Radjenovic put up a strong fight at No. 3 singles, but ultimately fell to Julius Seifert (BSU) in a hard-fought match, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4.
With the points all tied up 3-3, everyone looked to Forbes at No. 2 singles to win his set.
With the match to be decided on court 4, Forbes took on Carson Baker of Boise State. Forbes battled hard but fell in the final two sets, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 4-6.
The Spartans hit the road again when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell on Sunday, Feb. 23.
