EAST LANSING, Mich. – Top-ranked Michigan State hockey secured its second win of the weekend over consensus No. 3-ranked Penn State on Saturday, taking down the Nittany Lions in dominant fashion, 5-0, from Munn Ice Arena.
"Good finish to the weekend for our team," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "We've talked a lot about trying to get better from game-to-game and I thought we were better tonight than we were last night, we talked about that as a group. That's what I've enjoyed about this group. Even after we had to win the game in overtime on Friday, I wasn't dancing and doing all this stuff, it's hey, we've got to get better tomorrow, and we've got to play better tomorrow. I thought we skated better, we got on the forecheck better, and obviously you're playing a good team. The first ten minutes of the third period, Penn State really pushed, and our guys hung in there, and I'm proud of the guys for getting the job done. Now we've got a day off tomorrow and then we start getting ready for the next weekend."
A win improves the Spartans record to 7-1-0 (2-0-0 B1G) while the Nittany Lions fall to 9-3-0 (2-2-0 B1G). MSU earned five of the six possible standings points after Friday night's overtime victory.
Michigan State out-shot Penn State 48-36 overall and did so in every period. MSU was a spotless 5-for-5 on the penalty kill on Saturday and finished the weekend 9-for-9. This series marked the first time Penn State's power play was held scoreless all season.
Junior goaltender Trey Augustine was phenomenal in goal making a season-high 36 saves en route to his third shutout of the season and the ninth of his career. Augustine is now 10-4-2 all-time against Top 5 opponents.
Senior Charlie Stramel paced the Spartans with four points in game two finishing with two goals and two assists. Senior Daniel Russell assisted on three MSU goals on Saturday, while senior captain Matt Basgall assisted on two. Freshman Porter Martone tallied his fifth multi-point game this season with a goal and an assist. Freshman Anthony Romani notched his second goal of the series and sophomore Colin Ralph scored his first goal as a Spartan in the second period. Freshmen Sean Barnhill and Ryker Lee also recorded assists on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stramel opened the scoring for the Spartans just 2:32 into the contest on Saturday, scoring from the slot off a feed from Martone on a 2-on-2 rush to the net. Martone extended Michigan State's advantage to 2-0 late in the period, scoring at the 18:37 mark. Junior Maxim Strbak settled the puck at the MSU blue line and passed the puck to Lee, who found Stramel in front of net. Stramel made a smart pass to a waiting Martone who slotted it home for his fourth goal of the season. The Spartans were strong on the penalty kill, successfully killing both PSU power plays.
Ralph scored his first goal as a Spartan 11:56 into the second period, sending in a shot from the blue line looking for a deflection in front of the net, but scoring one himself instead. MSU kept the Nittany Lion power play at bay with a pair of successful penalty kills in the period. Penn State put two quick shots on goal at the end of their second power play late in the period, but both were stonewalled by Augustine.
Stramel cashed in on an empty net goal late in third thanks to an unselfish breakaway pass from Russell to make it 4-0. Michigan State went on a 5-on-3 power play late in the third after a slew of Nittany Lion penalties. Romani was the beneficiary, scoring his second goal of the weekend and third of the season.
