IOWA CITY – Michigan State field hockey dropped its first road game of the weekend, falling to No. 10-ranked Iowa by a score of 6-0 on Thursday evening from Grant Field.
MSU moves to 5-10 (1-5 B1G) and aims to bounce back Sunday when it travels to Bloomington, Indiana for its final road test of the regular season against No. 20-ranked Indiana. Sunday's contest will be streamed live on B1G+
The Hawkeyes led in shots (19-7) and shots on goal (11-1) on Thursday, while MSU held an advantage in penalty corner attempts (3-2).
Michigan State's offense was led by sophomore midfielder Carmen Maudlin, who had three of the seven MSU shots, and senior forward Gracie Burns, who had the lone MSU shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Lyra Gavino and sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Herbert both received time in goal for MSU. Gavino recorded two saves while Herbert tied a career-best with three.
Iowa took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter of play and added four goals in the second quarter to take their 6-0 advantage into halftime.
Things evened out in the second half on offense as Michigan State out-shot the Hawkeyes 7-6 over the final two quarters. MSU looked to do damage on three third quarter penalty corner opportunities, but all three shots by Maudlin were blocked. Freshman Ellie Kendall looked to capitalize on a rebound off Maudlin's final shot of the frame, but her shot went high.
