Field Hockey Travels To #10 Iowa, #20 Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey hits the road for the first time this month when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa to face-off against No. 10-ranked Iowa on Thursday, October 23 at 7 PM ET. Following Thursday's contest, the Spartans travel to Bloomington, Indiana for a Sunday show down against No. 20-ranked Indiana at 1 PM ET.
SERIES HISTORY
MSU trails Iowa in the all-time series 16-58-1. The Spartans are 7-24 when playing in Iowa City, with their last road meeting resulting in a 3-1 Hawkeye victory in October 2023. MSU's last win in Iowa City occurred in November 2013 by a final score of 4-3. Last season Michigan State took down a No. 16-ranked Iowa squad in East Lansing in overtime, 2-1.
MSU leads Indiana in the all-time series 27-9. Michigan State is 7-7 when playing in Bloomington. The Spartans concluded their season at Indiana last year, falling 1-0 on November 1.
ABOUT IOWA
Iowa enters Thursday sporting a 9-4 record (2-3 B1G), earning them a spot in the national rankings. The Hawkeyes went 1-1 on the east coast last weekend, falling to Penn State in overtime, 1-0, and defeating No. 15-ranked Rutgers in overtime, 4-3.
Iowa's offense is led by junior midfielder Dionne Van Aalsum. Van Aalsum leads Iowa in most offensive categories including goals (21), points (44), shots (91) and shots on goal (56). Van Aalsum leads the Big Ten in goals, points, shots and shots on goal. Second in charge of the Iowa attack is graduate forward Frederique Van Cleef. Van Cleef is second in goals scored (8), points (20), shots (4) and shots on goal (24).
Senior goalkeeper Mia Magnotta enters as the Hawkeyes top goalkeeper making 67 saves against 24 goals allowed thus far, giving her a .736 save percentage which ranks fifth in the B1G.
ABOUT INDIANA
Indiana rolls into the weekend sporting a 7-7 record (2-3 B1G). The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-0 weekend, in which they defeated No. 10-ranked Maryland in penalty strokes and later defeated Penn State in regulation, 3-1.
IU enters the weekend with a balanced offensive attack that is spearheaded by a trio of players; Junior midfielder Ines Garcia Prado, sophomore forward Charlotte Glasper, and sophomore forward Mijntje Hagen. Garcia Prado and Glasper are tied with a team-leading six goals, but Garcia Prado leads the team in points (20), shots (41) and shots on goal (29). Haegen leads the Hoosiers in assists (9) and is second in goals with five. Glasper and Haegen each have tallied 19 points. The Hoosiers have five players that have scored five or more goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Canelli enters as Indiana's top shot stopper. Canelli has made 37 saves against 21 goals allowed, giving her a .638 save percentage for the season.
LAST TIME OUT FOR MSU
MSU went 2-0 last week and earned its first conference victory over then No. 12-ranked Ohio State. The Spartans defeated Ball State on October 14 by a score of 5-1. Michigan State dominated the offensive end against Ball State, leading shots 22-10, while scoring five goals on the Cardinals. Junior Bianca Pizano led the way with two goals, followed by goals from senior Gracie Burns, sophomore Lillan Knorr, and junior Brynn Shaffer.
The Spartans defeated #12 OSU, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. MSU was led again by Pizano who tallied two shots on goal with one getting past the Buckeye goalkeeper, and was accompanied by Burns, sophomore back Caro Schafer, and freshman midfielder Ellie Kendall who each registered a goal of their own. In a back-and-forth game, MSU turned away the final OSU scoring chances with a pair of blocked shots as time wound down, securing an upset and the first conference win of the season.
EVEN DISTRIBUTION
Michigan State has 12 different goal scorers through 14 games this season. Three different Spartans are tied for third in goals scored with three each.
Pizano leads MSU with five goals scored, while Burns is second with four goals scored, followed by Schafer, B.Shaffer, and Caroline Horace who have each tallied three goals. Pizano and Schafer are tied for the team lead in points with 10 points each, with Burns trailing close behind with 9 points of her own.
UP NEXT
Michigan State will return to East Lansing next week for the conclusion of the regular season and will host top ranked Northwestern, and MAC opponent Central Michigan. Northwestern arrives to Ralph Young Field on Friday, October 31 for a 3 PM showdown, while Central Michigan will face off against the Spartans on Sunday, November 2 at 1 PM for the regular season finale.
