
Spartans Earn 3-1 Win In Home Opener

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State earned a 3-1 victory over Vermont in its 2024 home opener. MSU improved to 2-1 with the win.
MSU had three goal scorers and a pair of assists from Emma O'Neill in the victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans scored twice in the second frame, getting a goal from Skylar Santucci (at 20:42) and and a second (off a corner play at 25:31) by senior Jillian Bonczewski.
Each team found the back of the net in the third quarter. MSU went up by a 3-0 margin with Carmen Pucheta's first goal as a Spartan – she rocketed it into the back of the net on a corner play.
Vermont's (0-3) lone score came at 40:45, when a Catamount pass ricocheted off a defender and onto the stick of Marie Dijkstra, who had a mini-breakaway and she converted her second goal of the season.
Lyra Gavino improved to 2-1 on the year with a four-save effort, while Vermont's Ila Gunner also made four stops while allowing the three Spartan goals.
MSU had a 10-9 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners.
The Spartans host Ohio on Sunday (1 pm) to complete the non-conference weekend.
NOTES:
* Santucci and Pucheta's goals were each their first of the season. Pucheta's was also her first goal as a Spartan.
* Emma O'Neill picked up two assists on the day on Bonczewski's and Pucheta's goals off corner plays.
* Ellie Wheatley and Brynn Shaffer each had assists on the afternoon. It was Shaffer's first point of the season and Wheatley's second.
