East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime loss to Ohio on Sunday.
The Spartans (2-2), who had two goals reversed on review and what looked like an OT game-winner disallowed in the first overtime period. Ohio wins an OT thriller for the second straight day, and improves to 2-2 on the year.
Michigan State outshot its guests 24-14 overall in the game.
The OT winner came 2:32 into the second overtime period. The Bobcats had three straight corner opportunities and Anouk Plaehn scored the game-winner as a result of the third attempt- she put back a shot by Meela Kopp to head out of East Lansing with the overtime victory.
MSU was strong defensively through the first overtime frame, despite playing most of the 10-minute period down a player due to a yellow card against Emma O'Neill in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. Caro Schäfer broke up a 2-on-1 attempt, and Ellie Rutherford was able to redirect what looked like a wide-open shot on net to send the game into a second overtime.
The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in to halftime. MSU's first goal came off a nice putback from the stick of sophomore Bianca Pizano late in the first quarter, who redirected a blocked shot into the back of the net for her team-best third goal of the season.
The visiting Bobcats knotted the score early in the second quarter when Meela Kopp was awarded a penalty shot, and she converted for her first score of the year. MSU took the lead back at 24:12, when Maddie Lawlor kept it inside the circle and she pushed it to Rutherford, who converted a backhand shot for her first goal of the season.
The Bobcats tied up the game in the fourth quarter. Just after MSU had a goal disallowed that would have made it a 3-1 game, Sasha Dikotia potted her second of the season at 53:56.
Ohio goalie Macy Lotze made nine saves, including five in the second quarter. Lyra Gavino made two saves on the day.
The Spartans have a split of road and home contests next weekend. MSU travels to Kentucky for a 12 noon start on Friday at Bellarmine, and then returns home for an 11 am contest against Colgate on Sunday morning.
