Softball’s Late Rally Falls Short Against Michigan

MSU moves to 13-23 overall and 1-9 in B1G action while the Wolverines improve to 25-15 (7-3 B1G).
Junior Macy Lee was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with three singles, an RBI and a walk. Senior Anna Fox and sophomore Britain Beshears each finished with a pair of base knocks. Beshears recorded the lone extra-base hit of the night for MSU and drove in two runners, while Fox drove in one. Sophomore Sydney Doloszycki and senior Alexis Ross singled.
Fox and Lee each matched their career-high for single game hits. Lee previously had a trio of hits against Yale on March 10, 2023. Fox has now finished with a pair of his on five occasions.
The Spartans saw success reaching base with nine hits, seven walks and two hit by pitches on the night but left 12 runners on. Ross and sophomore Hannah Hawley walked twice each.
Starting in the circle for Michigan State was junior Madison Taylor (1-9) who pitched 3.2 innings. Taylor was relieved by junior Faith Guidry who struck out two over 3.1 innings of work.
After a scoreless first, Michigan scored four runs in the second inning headlined by Keke Tholl's first of three home runs on the night. Michigan State chipped away at the Wolverine advantage by executing a successful double steal in the home half of the frame when Ross swiped second and senior Collette Allen took off for home.

Michigan extended its lead to 7-1 with a three-run fourth inning, but Lee got the Spartans back on the board in the bottom of the fourth when her single to left scored freshman Payton Conroy.

Trailing 11-2 entering the bottom of the sixth and at risk of the run rule, Michigan State scored three runs. Back-to-back-to-back base hits were highlighted by a Beshears double down the left field line that scored Ross and Doloszycki. With two outs on the board, Fox singled up the middle to score Lee.

Michigan State will be back in action for another home midweek contest on Wednesday, April 10 when it takes on Western Michigan at 5:00 p.m. The Broncos are 17-16 this season and were narrowly defeated by Notre Dame, 3-2, on Tuesday night in South Bend, Ind.
