B1G Softball Season Continues at Iowa

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The B1G softball season keeps rolling along this weekend as the Michigan State softball team travels west to Iowa for a three-game series against the Hawkeyes on March 29-31. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Bob Pearl Softball Field. All games this upcoming weekend will be streamed on B1G+. Live stats are provided through StatBroadcast.

ABOUT IOWA
The Hawkeyes are 14-11 overall and opened B1G play last weekend with a 2-1 series win over Wisconsin at home. Iowa is ranked No. 101 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, going 5-5 against teams currently ranked between 51 and 100 in the RPI. Iowa's best win is a 4-2 result over Liberty. Iowa defeated the Badgers by scores of 4-1 and 10-4 in the first two games of the series before dropping the finale, 2-0.
The Hawkeyes share two common non-conference opponents with Michigan State, NC State and Notre Dame. Iowa went 1-1 against those teams, defeating NC State in the season opener 2-0 and losing to Notre Dame 5-4 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
MSU has not played a series in Iowa City since April 18-20, 2014. The Spartans went 2-1 that weekend winning games one and three (1-0, 4-0). Iowa leads the all-time series against Michigan State, 78-33. MSU is 9-47 when playing the Hawkeyes in Iowa City. Michigan State last defeated Iowa, 1-0, on Feb. 28, 2021.
The Hawkeyes rank No. 153 nationally in batting average (.266), No. 47 in ERA (2.53), No. 172 in OBP (.339), No. 162 in scoring  (4.04) and No. 138 in fielding percentage (.962).
Jaylee Ojo is No. 24 nationally in strikeouts per seven innings (9.0). Ojo owns a 3.64 ERA over five starts (eight appearances) and 25.0 innings in the circle. Opponents are hitting just .205 against her. Jalen Adams ranks No. 58 in innings pitched (89.2), along with a 2.26 ERA in 14 starts. Opponents have hit .248 against Adams, who has struck out 28 batters.
Rylie Moss is hitting .384 and is tied for the team-high with 28 hits (two extra-base). Jena Young has posted a .375 average with the team's only two home runs of the season. Soo-Jin Berry has a team-high seven extra-base hits and leads the Hawkeyes with 19 RBI while hitting .337.
MSU OPENS B1G SEASON AT NORTHWESTERN
Michigan State opened its conference slate with a tough road test at Northwestern last weekend, going 0-3. MSU was defeated by scores of 5-1, 11-3 and 4-0 playing in frigid temperatures.
Anna Fox had a strong weekend at the plate hitting .500 with a .600 on-base percentage. Mik Anthony successfully reached base in each of her at-bats going 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of walks and an RBI. Macy Lee and Jenae Wash also drove in runners for MSU last weekend.

MSU has hit 30 home runs through 29 games, which marks the most home runs by the program since the 2019 season (39 in 50 games). In 2024 Michigan State ranks No. 32 nationally in home runs per game (1.03) and is No. 90 in slugging percentage (.422). The Spartans need 34 home runs to crack the program Top 10 for single-season home runs.

HAULING IN HITS
Sophomore Hannah Hawley leads the Spartans  with a .349 batting average, a .440 on-base percentage and a 1.103 OPS, while tying for the team-high in slugging at .663. Hawley leads the team with 30 hits, 15 extra-base hits and 11 walks drawn. Her 16 runs scored is tied for the team-high with Britain Beshears. Hawley also leads the Spartans with nine multi-hit games (four three-hit games, five two-hit games) and is second with four multi-RBI games.
BALL MAGNET
Senior Jenae Wash leads the team in getting hit by pitch with six. Wash ranks No. 37 nationally and No. 5 in the B1G in hit by pitch per game (0.27). Wash has been hit by 12 pitches in her last 50 games played.
UP NEXT
After 32 consecutive road games, Michigan State softball will finally open Secchia Stadium for the season when the program welcomes Indiana to East Lansing for a three-game series on April 5-7. The Hoosiers are 23-9 (0-3 B1G) this season. First pitch from Old College Field is set for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5.
