COLUMBIA, S.C. – It took extra innings for No. 24-ranked Boston University to defeat Michigan State softball on Sunday morning, with the Spartans falling 3-2 in nine innings at Carolina Stadium at Beckham Field to conclude the Garnet & Black Invitational.
Michigan State moves to 12-13 in non-conference play with one final tune-up at Notre Dame on Tuesday before B1G action kicks off in Evanston, Ill. next weekend.
Senior Liv Grey was spectacular in the circle allowing just one earned run (one unearned) through seven innings on four hits. Grey struck out four which included several key inning-ending punch outs. Junior Madison Taylor (1-4) pitched in extras, allowing one earned run in 1.2 innings.
Sophomore Hannah Hawley led the way on offense with three hits, while senior Anna Fox added a pair. Senior Jenae Was recorded the lone extra-base hit of the day for MSU with a fourth inning double.
Fox and redshirt sophomore Mik Anthony each tallied an RBI. Sophomore Britain Beshears reached base twice on a walk and hit by pitch. Senior Collette Allen and sophomore Sydney Doloszycki also drew free bases.
Patience at the plate led to a two-run second frame for the Spartans. MSU drew three walks in the inning to chase Boston University starter Kasey Ricard from the circle. A bases loaded sac fly by Anthony plated Michigan State's first runner of the inning, and a two-out single to left by Fox scored another.
MSU looked to break the game open in the fifth inning with bases loaded, but the Terriers pitched themselves out of trouble.
A one-out seventh inning BU rally tied the game at 2-2 after an MSU throwing error put an extra runner on. Boston University was an inch away from a game-tying home run but scored just one run on a ball off the very top of the center field fence.
The Terriers scored on a ninth inning sac fly to defeat Michigan State.
