SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Michigan State took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning on Tuesday night, but a late rally by Notre Dame led to a 4-2 loss for the Spartans at Melissa Cook Stadium.
MSU will take a 12-14 record into B1G play this upcoming weekend when it travels to Evanston, Ill. to meet Northwestern (12-7).
Senior Liv Grey (8-6) was not charged with an earned run in a complete game effort, tossing six innings and striking out one, with four unearned runs crossing in the decisive sixth frame.
Five different Spartans recorded hits, led by two from junior Macy Lee who singled twice. Sophomore Hannah Hawley and senior Jenae Wash tallied one RBI each in the third inning, with Hawley launching her sixth home run of the season and the team's 30th of the campaign. Seniors Alexis Ross and Anna Fox also singled during Tuesday's action.
Hawley and the Spartan offense broke through in the third inning, with Hawley powering a lead-off home run over the center field wall. With two on and two outs, Wash doubled MSU's advantage with a single up the middle that scored sophomore Britain Beshears from third.
Michigan State held that advantage through five and half innings prior to a Fighting Irish rally in the sixth. Back-to-back base hits put two runners on for Notre Dame before a one-out Spartan error led to a run. With two outs on the board following a fielder's choice, the Fighting Irish scored one on a bases loaded walk and two more on a pinch-hit single up the middle of the infield.
