Softball Travels for Mid-Week Contests at Campbell, UNC Wilmington

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Fresh off an appearance at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. on February 23-25, Michigan State softball will continue its time on the road with mid-week games at Campbell and UNC Wilmington.
The Spartans will first meet Campbell on Tuesday, February 27 at 4:00 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C. before traveling to Wilmington, N.C. for a 5:00 p.m. game at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, February 28.
Series History
Tuesday will make the first-ever meeting between Michigan State and Campbell. MSU head coach Sharonda McDonald-Kelley was previously the head coach at Campbell for four seasons from 2019-2022. McDonald-Kelley led the Camels to consecutive NCAA Regional appearances in 2021 and 2022.
Michigan State is a perfect 3-0 all-time against UNC Wilmington, last defeating the Seahawks on March 4, 2017, by a final score of 8-7 at the Georgia Bulldog Invitational. Celeste Wood drove in three RBI and Kaitlyn Eveland was 3-for-3 at the plate in the win.
Last Weekend in Review
Michigan State went 2-3 at the Duke Invitational last weekend defeating Elon twice by score of 4-1 and 5-2. The Spartans were defeated by Boston (9-1), Villanova (2-1) and #6 Duke (22-0). Senior pitcher Liv Grey led the pitching staff with a 1.11 ERA over 12.2 innings pitched. Grey struck out 22 batters and opponents hit just .136 when she was in the circle. Sophomore Britain Beshears had another strong weekend at the plate hitting .385 with three home runs and five RBI. Beshears hit a walk-off three-run home run against Elon on Sunday, February 25.
About Campbell
Campbell has opened the season 5-10 overall but went 4-1 at the Camel Stampede last weekend where they lost a closely contested game against Incarnate Word, 2-1, in eight innings. The Camels are coached by second-year head coach Trena Prater, a former associate head coach at Iowa. Campbell is led offensively by Lindsay Lumsden who is hitting .394 through 13 appearances. A freshman, Lumsden leads the team with a .977 OPS. In the circle, Hannah Leierer has pitched a team-high 39.1 innings and has held opponents to .219 hitting through eight appearances. Leierer is second on the team in ERA at 3.03 behind Megan Gregory's 2.51.
About UNC Wilmington
UNC Wilmington is 8-5 overall and went 3-1 last weekend at their second home tournament of the season. The Seahawks defeated George Mason (2-0), Providence (2-1) and UMBC (5-4). UNCW came from behind to win games against Providence and UMBC late, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Skylar Stockton leads UNCW in batting average at .367 followed by Mary Sobataka hitting .333 through 13 games. Sobataka leads in extra-base hits (5) and RBI (9). Pitching has been UNCW's strong suit with three arms posting sub-two ERAs. Kara Hammock has a 1.72 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP in 36.2 innings of work along with three complete games and two shutouts. Emily Winstead is the team-leader in ERA at 1.29 through 32.2 innings in the circle. Primarily pitching in relief, Carrigan Ewers has a 1.50 ERA in eight appearances (one start) in 14.0 innings of work.

Through 15 games, Michigan State leads the B1G with 22 home runs and is fifth in slugging at .492. Beshears is third in the B1G in slugging (.975), fourth in OPS (1.397), second in RBI (17) and is tied for first in home runs (8). Sophomore Hannah Hawley is second in doubles (5) and junior Macy Lee is tied for seventh in walks (8). Grey is fourth in innings pitched (40.0), but leads in strikeouts (55), strikeouts looking (20).

Michigan State will play at the Chanticleer Showdown hosted by Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C on March 1-3. There the Spartans will face Iona (x2), Coastal Carolina, Yale and Oakland before returning to East Lansing.
