12/6/2024 11:05:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
Madison, Wis. – No. 1 Michigan State (11-2-0, 4-1 B1G) had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 4-0 shutout loss on the road at Wisconsin on Friday night.
The Spartans, who last lost a game on Oct. 11, were locked in a 1-0 game through 40 minutes, but a pair of Wisconsin tallies at 5:09 and 11:16 allowed the home team to solidify the victory. An empty net goal at 17:40 sealed it for the Badgers (6-8-1, 4-5-0 B1G)
For Wisconsin, Quinn Finley had a pair of goals – both in the third period, one into an empty net. Tyson Dyck and Owen Melenbacher had the other tallies. Goalie Tommy Scarfone made 26 saves. At the other end, Trey Augustine made 22 stops and allowed three goals.
The Spartans and the Badgers complete the weekend series on Saturday at 8 pm ET in a game that will air live on the Big Ten Network.

PERIOD RECAPS
First Period: Tyson Dyck opened the scoring with just over five minutes remaining in the opening period. Zach Shultz initiated the play in the defensive zone and fed Dyck at the offensive blueline on the left side. With a defenseman draped on his right side, Dyck carried the puck below the goal line and beat Augustine five-hole for his second goal of the season.
Second Period: The Spartans outshot their hosts in the second by a 9-7 edge, and both goalies needed to make saves to keep it a 1-0 score. MSU came closest, as a Daniel Russell shot clanged off the crossbar at the midpoint of the period.
Third Period: The Badgers got a second power play chance with five minutes elapsed in the third period. Gavin Morrisey fed it to Cody Laskosky at the left post, and the winger passed it backwards between his legs to Quinn Finley in the right circle, and the sophomore one-timed it for his 10th goal of the season. At 8:44, Owen Melanbacher made it a 3-0 game. Trey Augustine made the first to saves on a scramble in front of the crease, but Augustine was above the blue ice when a loose puck got out to Melanbacher on the right side, who had a yawning net into which to put his first goal of the season. With Augustine on the bench in favor of an extra skater, Finley picked up the empty-net tally for his second goal of the night and the final 4-0 margin.
