EUGENE, Ore. – Michigan State fell at No. 6/6 Oregon, 31-10, Friday night before a sold-out crowd at Autzen Stadium.
The Spartans enter their bye week at 3-3 (1-2 Big Ten), while the Ducks remain undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 Big Ten).
Junior tight end Jack Velling led MSU with six catches for 53 yards, while freshman Nick Marsh had three grabs for 58 yards. Sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles was 10-of-17 passing for 154 yards. Sixth-year graduate senior Kay'ron Lynch-Adams rushed nine times for 32 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, junior cornerback Charles Brantley recorded his third interception of the season and led MSU with nine tackles. Junior safety Malik Spencer collected the first interception of his career in the first quarter and had seven stops. Sixth-year graduate defensive lineman D'Quan Douse had a team-high two tackles for loss and four tackles overall.
Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who entered the game leading the nation in completion percentage, threw two interceptions, but did finish the game 20-of-32 for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan James paced the Ducks on the ground with 166 yards and one score while Tez Johnson had 10 receptions for 84 yards and one TD.
"Credit to Oregon, Coach Lanning, that staff, they do a nice job," said MSU head coach Jonathan Smith. "They've got a good team, and they came and played well tonight, way better than we did, forced some issues on us, and we've got to find a way to respond and get better.
"Game six, halfway point of the regular season, and we come on the bye. We've got to regroup, we've got to find ways to improve, starting with us as coaches, finding best ways positionally where we're putting them in, scheme, where we're at, flaws, and find a way to improve on it, and move forward because we've got a lot of football left in front of us."
SCORING SUMMARY
After forcing an Oregon three-and-out to start the game, Michigan State drove the ball to the 2-yard line on its first possession following a 44-yard pass play from Chiles to Marsh on fourth down, but the Spartans fumbled on the next play, giving the ball back to the Ducks.
The Spartan defense then came up with its own turnover in the end zone, as Spencer made a diving interception on third-and-goal, keeping the Ducks off the scoreboard.
Oregon scored the game's first points on its third drive, going 75 yards on seven plays in 3:30, capped by a 9-yard TD run by Gabriel to make it 7-0 with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.
MSU picked off Gabriel for the second time in the red zone early in the second quarter as Brantley read the pass and hauled in the ball near the goal line at the 2-yard line for his third interception of the season.
