• Fresh off a bye week, Michigan State returns to action to face Iowa for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on NBC and streamed on Peacock with Noah Eagle (play-by-play), Todd Blackledge (analyst) and Kathryn Tappen (sidelines) on the call.
• Michigan State (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) fell at No. 6/6 Oregon on Oct. 4 prior to the bye week, while Iowa (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) beat Washington in Kinnick Stadium last Saturday, 40-16. MSU opened the season 3-0 with wins over Florida Atlantic, Maryland and Prairie View A&M. The Spartans lost at Boston College in Week 4, 23-19, on a late fourth-quarter touchdown before falling to No. 3/3 Ohio State and the sixth-ranked Ducks.
• Saturday's game marks the 50th meeting between Michigan State and Iowa. The Hawkeyes own a slim 25-22-2 series lead, but the Spartans hold an 11-10-1 edge in games in East Lansing. Saturday's game is the first visit by Iowa to Spartan Stadium since a 17-10 win for MSU in 2017. The Spartans fell to No. 7 Iowa, 15-13, on Oct. 24, 2009, in the only other previous night-game matchup in Spartan Stadium.
• Dating back to 1915, this year marks the 108th Homecoming game for Michigan State. The only years Homecoming games were not held since 1915 were 1943 and 2020. MSU is 70-34-3 (.668) in 107 previous Homecoming games.
• This year's Homecoming features former Spartan men's basketball All-American Sam Vincent as the Homecoming grand marshal. Vincent ranks eighth in MSU history in scoring with 1,851 points and was a first-round pick in 1985 by the Boston Celtics, where he won an NBA Championship ring in 1986. This year's Homecoming Parade begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 in downtown East Lansing and the MSU campus. For more information, please visit homecoming.msu.edu.
• Jonathan Smith is in his first season as head coach of the Spartans after six successful seasons (2018-23) at Oregon State. Named the 2022 Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year, Smith built Oregon State into one of the top teams in the conference. He led the Beavers, who were ranked as high as 11th in the College Football Playoff rankings in 2023, to an 8-4 record in the regular season and their third straight bowl appearance, a first for the program since 2006-09. OSU went 25-13 in 2021-23 under Smith, including a No. 17 ranking in 2022 and a win over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl.
