BC Stops MSU, 3-0, in Home Opener

East Lansing, Mich. –No. 2 Boston College scored a trio of second-period goals and held on to defeat No. 4 Michigan State 3-0 on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.
The Spartans (2-1) were outshot 14-7 in that middle frame, which tilted the final shot total in favor of the visiting Eagles, 29-24. Boston College got a pair of goals from Will Vote and one from Oskar Jellvik to stake the sizeable lead in that middle stanza. Despite outshooting their guests 9-7 in the final period, sophomore goalie Jacob Fowler turned each of them away to preserve his first win and shutout of the season.
Fowler had 24 saves on the night, and Augustine finished with 26.
BC took a pair of penalties to MSU's one, but neither squad could take advantage of their limited opportunities.
The teams will face off again on Saturday to wrap up the series in a 6 pm puck drop.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
First Period: The teams treated the sellout crowd at Munn Arena to a high-tempo penalty-free first period, with each squad putting eight shots on the netminders – both were up to the task, and sent the teams into the first intermission with a 0-0 score.

Second Period: The Eagles came out with a flurry of shots in the second period, putting up nine shots in the opening nine minutes of the frame. It led to a pair of Will Vote goals in that frame – at 1:47, Vote was stationed at the right post and tipped a shot from the left point by Lukas Gustafsson for the Eagles' first goal of the season. At 7:27, Vote dropped the puck to freshman James Hagens in the slot and went to the net, and with the attention drawn to the left side, Hagens got it back to Vote with a wide-open right side for a second BC goal. The first power play of the game went to the Eagles after a hitting from behind call against Owen West – but the first good chance went to the Spartans, as Charlie Stramel was sprung for a shorthanded breakaway that was saved by Fowler. Oskar Jellvik finished off a cross-slot pass from Gabe Perrault with less than 30 seconds remaining in the period to push the visitor lead to 3-0. BC had a 14-7 edge in shots in the frame.
Third Period: MSU had a 9-7 edge in shots in the final period, but the visiting goalie was up to the task. The Spartans rebounded with a strong third period, and had a little opportunity when the Eagles took a pair of penalties in the period – but the BC defense and Fowler allowed just a single shot on goal on the kill.

- MSU was not shut out at all in the 2023-24 season; the last shutout against MSU was a 1-0 decision to Notre Dame on March 3, 2023 in the first game of the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. MSU rebounded to win that series 2-1 with twin 4-2 scores in the next two games.
- Trey Augustine made 26 saves.
- The Spartans of 1974-75 were on hand to help celebrate the yearlong 50th anniversary celebration of Munn Ice Arena. A total of 21 players and coaches from the first team to play in the facility were back in East Lansing.
- MSU's youngest player, Shane Vansaghi, celebrated his 18th birthday today. He is the sixth youngest player in Division I hockey this season. BC centerman James Hagens is three weeks younger with a Nov. 3 birthdate (and is the nation's fourth-youngest player), and he earned his first collegiate point tonight. The duo were teammates the last two years with the US National Team Development Program and are 2025 NHL Draft Eligible.
- MSU's opening night crowd was another sellout of 6,555. The Spartans have sold out 15 consecutive games dating back to last October.
