EAST LANSING, Mich.—Michigan State field hockey dropped its home opener against visiting Saint Joseph's, 2-0.
No. 10 Saint Joseph's (4-1) got on the board when Hawks midfielder Leigh James found a pass from Manu Ghigliotti with 30 seconds left in the first stanza.
Ghigliotti among top five in the nation in scoring, followed up with a goal of her own two minutes into the second quarter following a Hawks corner attempt. Ghigliotti owns seven goals and three assists in the Hawks' first five games of the season.
"We made adjustments and have seen improvements from last week which I am pleased with," said head coach Helen Knull. "We still have work to do in our attacking phase and outcomes. We will continue to work and look to improve against Stanford on Tuesday."
The Spartans (1-3) started out aggressive in the first 10 minutes when Hannah Jarvie and Celina Riccardo each had a quality scoring chance, but St. Joseph's goalie Jannelle Ward kept the Spartans off the board.
MSU shutout the Hawks over the final 44 minutes. Lyra Gavino made her second consecutive start in the Green and White and had a season high five saves.
Michigan State will be back in action when it hosts Stanford University on Tuesday, September 12 at 1 p.m.
