East Lansing—Michigan State field hockey looks to get back in the win column as they host Stanford University Tuesday, September 12 at 1 p.m.
Â
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
Michigan State hosts its second of four straight home games. MSU has started a pair of goalies in Lyra Gavino and Cecily Charles who each started two games this season. Gavino has made two consecutive starts, in the 2-0 lost to Saint Joseph's, Gavino shut out the 10th ranked Hawks in the final 44 minutes recording a season high five saves. Emma O'Neill is the leading goal scorer for MSU (3) and both Tess Keppel and Ellie Wheatley each have one assist.
Â
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
Stanford is returning 10 players from last year's team, including its leading scorer Haley Mossmer. Mossmer contributed to 38 percent of the Cardinal points last year, finding the back of the net 11 times while adding one assist for a total of 23 points. Stanford head coach Roz Ellis is no stranger to Big Ten opponents. Prior to her time as the Cardinal head coach Ellis spent three years (2018-20) as an assistant for the University of Iowa. During her time the Hawkeyes saw the NCAA Tournament all three years under Ellis.
Â
The Cardinal is 1-4 through five games this season, all four loses have been to NFHCA top-20 teams.
Â
Freshman forward Gemma Townsend leads Stanford in scoring (seven points) and goals (3) this season.
Â
THE SERIES
Tuesday's matchup will be the 15th all-time meeting between these two programs. The Spartans hold a narrow 8-6 edge in the series, including a 4-2 home record. Last season MSU fell to the Cardinal in a 1-0 shootout. A win over Stanford will be the Spartans first since 2012. Â Â
