Spartans Fall to Third-Ranked Ohio State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis fell to No. 3 Ohio State, 7-0, in the Spartans' first outdoor home match in East Lansing Friday afternoon.
MSU dropped to 7-11 (0-4 B1G), while Ohio State improved to 22-2 (5-0 B1G).
The Buckeyes quickly picked up the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. OSU's Andrew Lutschaunig and Reece Yakubov topped freshman Ozan Baris and fifth-year senior Anthony Pero, 6-2, while senior Kazuki Matsuno and freshman David Saye fell to the Buckeyes' Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy, 6-1. Junior Reed Crocker and sophomore Josh Portnoy's match against 37th-ranked Robert Cash and Justin Boulais on court two went unfinished after the Buckeyes clinched the doubles point.
The Spartans put up a strong effort in singles, but were unable to top the Buckeyes, who boasted ranked singles players in the first five positions. Baris, playing in the final match to finish on court one, forced a super tiebreak against 48th-ranked Boulais after dropping his first set. In a back-and-forth battle, Baris eventually fell 11-9 in the third set, resulting in a 7-5, 2-6, [11-9] win for Boulais.
Junior Luke Baylis played on court two for the second time this season, falling 6-3, 6-2 to OSU's 17th-ranked Cannon Kingsley. Pero and Portnoy also faced top-30 opponents, with Pero falling to No. 21 JJ Tracy, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, and OSU's 28th-ranked James Trotter defeating Portnoy, 6-1, 6-0.
Saye faced OSU's final ranked singles player on court five, falling 7-5, 6-2 to No. 57 Alexander Bernard. Matsuno, playing on court six, was topped 6-1, 6-2 by OSU's Jack Anthrop.
MSU continues its home stretch on Sunday, April 9, hosting Penn State at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for noon.
