East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's field hockey team had the early chance on Friday not, but No. 15 Penn State stopped the chance and scored one goal in each quarter en route to a 4-0 win over the Spartans at Ralph Young Field.
The Spartans fall to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten Conference, while the Nittany Lions improve to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Michigan State had its best just over three minutes into the game, when a penalty corner was awarded. After the corner was inserted by senior Emma O'Neill, a shot from fifth year Celina Riccardo was saved.
A penalty shot was awarded to MSU and the shot from graduate Tess Keppel was saved by Penn State goalie Brie Barraco.
Spartan keeper sophomore Cecily Charles made a great save on a shot from Penn State's Sophia Gladieux in the seventh minute to keep the game scoreless. Just over a minute later, however, Gladieux found the net after taking a feed from Julia Lamb and scoring from the left of the goal.
The teams traded possession over the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Spartans had a penalty corner in the fourth minute and an ensuing shot from Riccardo that the Nittany Lions held off. With just over five minutes to play before halftime, Julienne Bekkum picked up a loose ball in front of the net off a feed from Madison Tambroni and scored to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.
Penn State increased its lead to 3-0 late in the third quarter on an unassisted goal from Mackenzie Allessie.
The Nittany Lions lead grew to 4-0 five minutes into the fourth quarter when Gladieux scored her second goal of the game, a back-handed shot from just inside the circle.
Penn State out-shot Michigan State, 11-5, and had a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
Michigan State closes out a two-game weekend homestand on Sunday, Oct. 15, hosting No. 4 Rutgers at Ralph Young Field. Push-back is slated for 1 p.m.
