Spartans Fall to No. 24 Ohio State in Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing its third-straight top-25 opponent, Michigan State field hockey fell to No. 24 Ohio State, 2-1, in overtime Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field.
The loss drops Michigan State to 0-4 in conference play and 4-5 overall. Ohio State, getting its first conference win of the season, moves to 1-3 in B1G play and 4-5 overall.
The Spartans and Buckeyes battled in a defensive first quarter, as neither team was able to get on the board in the first fifteen minutes. Michigan State held off three Ohio State shots in the quarter.
Sophomore midfielder Ellie Rutherford gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter for her fourth goal of the season. The Spartans began the scoring play with a penalty corner shot by Isa van der Weij that was saved by Ohio State's goalkeeper. After the save, Rutherford collected the ball as it came down to send in the goal. Despite a 5-3 Ohio State lead in shots, the Spartans held the 1-0 advantage for the duration of the second quarter and throughout the third.
Ohio State tied the game in the fourth quarter after Sarah Richards passed to Delaney Lawlor in a re-direct after a penalty corner. Michigan State did not record a shot in the fourth quarter but held off five Ohio State shots to send the game into overtime.
Ohio State's Emma Goldean scored the golden goal for the Buckeyes in the 63rd minute to give Ohio State the victory.
Four different Spartans recorded shots in the loss, including van der Weij and Rutherford, as well as senior forward Hannah Jarvie and junior midfielder Kim Smit. Spartans' goalkeeper Monique Jardell made three saves.
The Spartans stay on the road in Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday, Oct. 2 for a noon non-conference matchup. The game will stream via YouTube on the Ohio Bobcat TV channel.
