
Softball to Tussle with Michigan, Purdue This Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State softball team is set for another four-game week when it welcomes No. 23-ranked Michigan for a Tuesday night showdown before heading to West Lafayette, Indiana for a three-game set at Purdue. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:02 p.m.

SPARTAN NOTES TO KNOW
With 208 strikeouts this season, sophomore Ashley Miller ranks 5th in program history for single season strikeouts. Miller has thrown five complete game shutouts this season and 16 complete games overall, highlighted by the third perfect game in program history on Sunday, Feb. 13 against Akron.
Single Season Strikeout Leaders
Fifth year Caitie Ladd is second on the team lead in stolen bases with nine. Over the last 10 games Ladd has been one of MSU's best hitters, posting a .303 average on 10-of-33 hitting. In the last five games Ladd leads the team in batting average at .375 alongside senior Courtney Callahan. Ladd is 5th all-time in doubles at MSU with 42, 7th in extra base hits with 65 and 22nd in career hits with 171.
Career Hits Leaders
Sophomore Alexis Barroso leads the team in batting average (.336) and RBI (23). Camryn Wincher has turned in a strong junior campaign with a .321 batting average, ranking second on the team in RBI with 18. Wincher has the most hits on the team with 42.
Senior Jessica Mabrey has been a staple in the lead-off spot for the Spartans, hitting .304 with a team-high .447 on-base percentage. Mabrey is second on the team with five home runs. Mabrey has an OBP of .514 when leading off an inning. Mabrey's 27 walks would have led the team during the 2021 season. Mabrey also leads the team in runs with 25.
Callahan has been a consistent presence in the MSU lineup this season playing each of the outfield corners depending on who is pitching. Callahan is hitting .301 with eight doubles, a triple and two home runs. Her 10 stolen bases leads the team.
Sophomore Zaquai Dumas has home runs in all but one of Michigan State's conference matchups this season, homering against Northwestern, Ohio State, Michigan and Nebraska so far.
THE OPPONENTS
MICHIGAN
Michigan is 26-13 this season with a 6-6 record in the Big Ten. The Wolverines defeated Michigan State earlier this season by a score of 6-1 at Alumni Field. Head Coach Carol Hutchins is in her 38th season at the helm of the program and was inducted into the Michigan State University Athletics Hall of Fame last year. Hutchins is the all-time winningest coach in DI history with 1,698 career wins.
Michigan is hitting .291 as a team with a .362 on-base percentage. Kristina Burkhardt is hitting .415 to lead the team and her .461 OBP ranks second behind Melina Livingston. Livingston is second on the team in batting average with a .391. Both Burkhardt and Livingston boast an OPS over 1.000.
Audrey LeClair, Annabelle Widra, Hannah Carson and Lexie Blair are all hitting over .300. Carson is the team leading in RBI with 29. Sierra Kersten leads the team in home runs with five.
Alex Storako is one of the best pitchers in the country with a 1.64 ERA and 225 strikeouts to her name. With a .88 WHIP, opponents hit just .164 off of her.
PURDUE
Purdue is 19-24 this season and is on a five-game losing streak. The Boilermakers were swept by Northwestern last weekend by scores of 14-2, 10-1 and 10-2. The Spartans have not played at Purdue since the 2017 season. Head coach Boo De Oliveira is in her sixth season as head coach. De Oliveira owns a 122-165 career record.
Rachel Becker leads Purdue with a .402 batting average in 43 starts. Becker's .496 OBP leads the team as does her 47 hits. With 10 doubles, three triples and three home runs, Becker leads Purdue in XBH.
Alex Echazarreta hits and pitches for the Boilermakers, hitting .370 with a team-high seven home runs and 28 RBI. Echazarreta also leads the team in inning pitched (87.1) and ERA (3.37).
