What you need to know about Spartan Hockey
• Michigan State hosts Long Island University on Friday and Saturday for a pair of non-conference games.  LIU is in its third season playing Division I hockey, launching its program in the 2020-21 campaign.  Brett Riley was named the inaugural coach of the Sharks in May 2020, and has guided his program to a 14-33-4 mark over the first two-plus seasons.  This will be the first-ever series between MSU and LIU.  Â
•  The Spartans have split each of their first two weekend series against RV Bowling Green and No. 16/16 UMass-Lowell.  Last weekend, the Spartans faced both prosperity and adversity - MSU took an early 3-1 lead and held on for a 4-3 win on Thursday, but fell behind 3-0 in Friday's game before a third-period rally fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the River Hawks.  MSU's four games have all been essentially one-goal affairs, with only the empty-net goal by Bowling Green in the opener deciding a game by more than one score.  MSU's scoring defense, (2.50 goals per game) is third in the Big Ten and 19th nationally.
•  Daniel Russell shared the team's scoring lead with defenseman Matt Basgall last weekend against UMass-Lowell, each with a goal and two assists.  Russell has a point in every game this season, is tied for eighth in the B1G with five points, and his three goals is tied for fourth.  Basgall leads the Spartans with a +3 rating and seven blocked shots (T-sixth, B1G), and is the team's top-scoring blueliner through four games.  Â
•  Senior Nicolas Müller is second on the team in points (4), more than halfway to his total of six a year ago.  Muller played in his 100th career game against Bowling Green, and has a three-game point-scoring streak.  He had two assists in the most recent game vs. UMass-Lowell and is tied for fifth in the Big Ten in assists (4).
•  Senior graduate transfer Miroslav Mucha had a pair of first-period goals in the first game against UMass-Lowell, his first two goals as a Spartan and his second career multi-goal game.  He previously had two last January in a game at Northern Michigan. Â
•  Dylan St. Cyr has played in all four Spartan games this season, and owns a 2.29 GAA (fourth, B1G) and .906 save percentage (fourth, B1G).  He picked up a win last Thursday behind 19 saves, and stopped 26 in Friday's 3-2 loss.  St. Cyr did stop a penalty shot early in the Friday contest.  Among active Division I netminders, St. Cyr ranks sixth in career goaltender wins (28), sixth in GAA (2.10) and save percentage (.924) and fourth in shutouts (10)
