MADISON, Wis. - Michigan State's men's and women's cross country teams travel to Madison, Wis. for the annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 14. The meet, which takes place at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country course, includes 19 ranked teams on the men's side and 24 on the women's side.Â
The meet features four races, with the top seven athletes from each team competing in the men's and women's championship races. The remaining athletes will run in the 'B' races. Â
The No. 27 Michigan State men return to action after a three-week hiatus, last competing at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 23. In Minneapolis, the Spartan men finished third out of 17 teams and placed four runners in the top 20. Â
Individually, senior Aden Smith looks to continue his breakout season after winning the Roy Griak Invitational in a personal-best 8k time of 24:13. Smith also placed third at the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 16. Â
Also on the men's side, graduate student Abdi-Fetah Ahmed finished third overall in Minneapolis and placed second at the Big Ten Preview meet on Sept. 9. John Petruno has recorded two top-20 finishes this season, and junior Andrew Nolan placed seventh at the Big Ten Preview and 15th at the Roy Griak Invitational. Â
Friday will be the first race for graduate transfer and multi-time Division II All-American CarLee Stimpfel in a Spartan uniform. Stimpfel notched fourth-place finishes at both the Big Ten Preview (18:05/6k) and Spartan Invitational (24:40/8k) running unattached. Â
Freshman Riley Hough will also make his MSU debut Friday. Hough placed fifth at the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships and won the Eastbay Cross Country Championships as a senior at Hartland High School last year.Â
The Michigan State women, posting their highest ranking of the season so far at No. 17, most recently won the Lansing Invitational on Sept. 30 with a perfect 15 points. They also placed third at the Roy Griak Invitational, topping three ranked teams and placing three runners in the top 20.Â
Spartan women to watch include graduate student Katie Osika, who placed sixth (21:00/6k) at the Roy Griak Invitational and second (21:14/6k) at the Spartan Invitational. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes won the Spartan Invitational (21:07/6k) and finished 19th at the Roy Griak Invitational (21:19/6k). Junior Makenna Veen has consistently finished in the Spartan top three, finishing third at the Spartan Invitational (21:22/6k) and 14th at the Roy Griak Invite (21:14/6k).Â
Junior Madison Price led the Spartan sweep at the Lansing Invitational, finishing in 18:38 (5k). Â
In last year's edition of the meet, the MSU women placed 12th and the men placed 24th. Â
"We're excited to explore our potential tomorrow in preparation for the championship portion of our season," Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau said.Â
Up next, the Spartans wrap up the regular season at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday, Oct. 21 in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 28 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Â
