Several Spartans Set Personal Bests at Highly Competitive Nuttycombe Invitational

MADISON, Wis. - Several runners from the Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams posted their career-best times on Friday at the Nuttycombe Invitational, while the No. 17 MSU women took 18th place and the No. 27 Spartan men finished in 23rd in the championship races at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
Both championship races were packed with ranked teams with N.C. State winning the women's race and Stanford capturing the men's title.
Senior Katie Osika led the way for the Spartan women in the championship race, finishing 37th with a personal best time of 20:25. Junior Makenna Veen was 96th, clocking in at 20:53, a new career best. Graduate student Grace Molloy was the third Michigan State runner to cross the line in 20:59, which was good for 116th. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes (131st/21:03) and sophomore Lauren Freeland (153rd/21:14) were the next two Spartans to finish. Freeland set a new PR with her time. The top seven for the MSU women were rounded out by sophomore Katelyn Stewart-Barnett (160th/21:17) and junior Taylor Visscher (163rd/21:18).
In the men's championship 8k race, freshman Riley Hough was the top finisher for the Spartans with a time of 23:58. Graduate student Abdi-Fetah Ahmed had a personal best with a time of 24:04 to finish 103rd. Graduate student CarLee Stimpfel was the third Spartan to cross the line (103rd/24:17), while senior Aden Smith followed (139th /24:17), just off his personal best. Junior Fraser Wilson set a new personal best with a time of 24:26. Graduate student John Petruno (166th/24:31) and junior Owen Huard (182nd/24:38) rounded out the top seven for the Green and White, both with PRs.
The Spartans started the day with the women's 6k 'B' race, led by senior Judith Rector who crossed the line first for the Spartans in 30th place (21:38). Junior Eleanor Kendell followed in 38th, running 21:46. Junior Fatima Giron also turned in a top-50 finish for the Spartans, finishing in 21:57 for 47th place.
Olivia Millen (56th/22:06), Madison Price (63rd/22:12), Abigail Lee (88th/22:40) and Elizabeth Dalrymple (95th/22:48) rounded out the top seven for MSU. Alison Ziehl (103rd/22:58), Abbey Carvey (110/23:12) and Madelynn Bean (23:45) also finished for the Spartans.
Up next, the Spartans wrap up the regular season at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday, Oct. 21 in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 28 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
