Spartan Women Finish First at EMU Fall Classic

DEXTER, Mich. - Led by a first-place team finish on the women's side, Michigan State men's and women's cross country wrapped up the regular season Friday afternoon at the EMU Fall Classic.
The Spartan women placed three runners in the top 10, finishing 78 points ahead of second place. Junior Madison Price crossed the line first for the Spartans in fourth, running a personal best 5k time of 17:55. Junior Abigail Lee and senior Alison Ziehl also finished in the top 10 in personal best times, running 18:04 (7th place) and 18:05 (8th place), respectively.
Four more Michigan State runners recorded top-20 finishes, led by sophomore Abbey Carvey in 12th (18:17), Kaya Kuokkanen in 17th (18:39), Julia Bajt (18:43) in 18th and Annika Linzmeier in 19th (18:43). Avery McLean rounded out the Spartan finishers in 21st (18:51).
On the men's side, sophomore Gage Killewald ran 16:02 to lead the Spartans, finishing in 20th place. Hunter Zartman followed in 21st, running 16:02. Killewald tied his personal best, while Zartman set a personal best by over 30 seconds.
"Our crew did an excellent job of competing today by focusing on the process of being a teammate and having a courageous mindset," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau.
Up next, the Spartans head to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Big Ten Championships on Friday, Oct. 28. The women's race is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. and the men's race will take place at 11:45 a.m. Live streaming is available on B1G+.
