EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State field hockey team improved to 4-1 on the season after a thrilling sudden victory shootout win over Miami (Ohio) Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.
Â
Sophomore Aisha Osinga recorded the game-winning goal in the sudden victory shootout to push the Spartans past the Redhawks, 3-2.
Â
Michigan State junior Lia Sinisi gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead at the 18th minute, knocking in a slow roller past the Redhawk goalkeeper for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The Redhawks answered with just under two minutes to go in the half with a goal from Lexi Silver, assisted by Allie Grace Joyner.
Â
MSU outshot the Redhawks in the first half, 9-7, with five shots on goal to just two for the Redhawks. Miami (Ohio) regained the lead late in the fourth quarter when Gabby Luxardo tipped in a shot from Leonor Berlie. Freshman Merel Hanssen used her speed and toughness throughout the match to help the Spartans on the attacking end, and at the 53rd minute striped a shot off Redhawk goalie Isabelle Perese's glove that was rebounded and scored by Osinga, her second of the season, to knot the match at two.
Â
"The team played a gritty game today. I'm proud of the fight and never-give-up attitude. Jade was excellent in the shootout and made some key saves for us throughout the game. Time to enjoy this win then reset for UConn on Sunday," ninth year head coach Helen Knull said.
Â
Led by Arundell with four saves, the Spartans used stingy defense in the fourth quarter crunch time to force overtime. Midfielders Celina Riccardo and Hanssen opened up multiple opportunities on the offensive side, but the Spartans couldn't capitalize in either overtime to force a shootout.
Â
Tied at four in shootout action, Riccardo's game-winning shot just missed going in the left side of the cage to force a sudden victory shootout. After Sinisi missed her opening attempt, Arundell saved the Spartans on Miami's attempy to force a second sudden victory shootout. Osinga used a lob approach to score the go-ahead goal and Arundell stick slapped Berlie's final attempt to give the Spartans the 3-2 win.
Â
Sinisi recorded her fourth goal of the season for the Spartans, while Osinga captured her second. Arundell moved her save total to 31 on the season with a 4-1 record in the net. Freshman Nienke Bloemsaat recorded a defensive save for MSU.
Â
The Spartans take Saturday off before hosting No. 3 UConn on Sunday at Ralph Young Field. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
