KENT, Ohio- Michigan State field hockey used a strong defensive performance to knock off Kent State, 1-0, Sunday at Murphy-Mellis Field.
"It is great to start the season with two wins on the road. Today we played a quick Kent State team who really put us on our heels in the first half. The team made some much needed adjustments at the half and we settled in during the second half to play our own game," said MSU field hockey head coach Helen Knull.
Kent State took control early in the game, combining on 11 shots to MSU's one in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Arundell collected three saves in that stretch to hold the Golden Flashes scoreless.
MSU picked up the intensity on the offensive and defensive side in the second half, holding Kent State to just two shots while combining for five of its own.
On a penalty corner in the 33rd minute, sophomore forward Aisha Osinga took a direct shot that was blocked, but grabbed her own rebound and shot a laser through the legs of the goalkeeper to put the Spartans up 1-0.
"Jade (Arundell) was excellent both games. Her communication and organization was outstanding and she made some clutch saves fro us. It has been great watching her grow and mature in the goal from her freshman to sophomore season,' Knull added.
MSU held strong down the stretch on the defensive side to close out the win in Kent. Arundell, who started all 20 games in the net last season, collected her second shutout in as many days and four saves.
"We are looking forward to returning home 2-0 and welcoming UC Davis and Louisville next weekend,' said Knull.
