Lia Sinisi provided the Spartans with the game-winning goal in double overtime
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey rallied late to knock off UC Davis in double overtime, 2-1, Friday evening at Ralph Young Field.
The Spartans move to 3-0 on the season with the win. Freshman Nienke Bloemsaat and junior Lia Sinisi recorded both goals for the Spartans, while sophomore Aisha Osinga and Cara Bonshak each tallied an assist.
"We struggled to connect and it was our basic passing and receiving at times. In our marking, we were a little lackadaisical on the defensive side of things. We grinded and we got a win, which was great. We've got to start getting connected for Sunday (vs. No. 12 Louisville). I know they are absolutely capable of it, we've just got to start trusting and playing as a team," said MSU field hockey head coach Helen Knull.
The Spartans and Aggies put on a defensive show in the first quarter, as both goalies recorded a combined three saves on four shots. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Jade Arundell recorded two saves in the first quarter, on her way to five for the game and her third win in the net.
UC Davis struck first minutes before halftime when Shannon Wong tipped in a shot by Sara Janetzky after a penalty corner at the 27th minute.
The Spartans battled back in the second half to tie the score at one. On their second penalty corner of the game, the Spartans used a goal from Bloemsaat with assists from insertor Aisha Osinga and stick-stopper, Cara Bonshak at the 41st minute.
The two teams battled it out for the remainder of regulation, forcing a sudden-death overtime period. After going scoreless in the first period, Sinisi received a long pass on the far sideline in the second overtime and created space to get past the goalie and fire in the game-winning goal with just under a minute gone in the period.
Bloemsaat records her second goal of her career, while Sinisi punched in her team-leading third. Arundell moved her save total to 15 on the season and 3-0 in the cage.
MSU welcomes No. 12 Louisville to Ralph Young Field on Sunday, Sept. 6. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
