Spartans swept in Big Ten series vs. Indiana
SPARTAN SYNOPSIS
Michigan State saw host Indiana stage two significant rallies in the first and third innings and fell to the Hoosiers, 15-2, in the finale of the three-game weekend series.
The Hoosiers, receiving votes in the national polls this week, rattled off 15 base hits, hitting double-digit runs for the second time in the series to even their Big Ten record at 3-3 and improve to 28-10 overall. The Spartans dropped their third straight in the series and fall to 11-21 and 1-5 in Big Ten play.
Indiana got a big game from Maddie Westmoreland, who had three hits with a double and a homer. Grayson Radcliffe was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and three runs scored. Taylor Lambert also added three base knocks, including a triple. Staff ace Tara Trainer started the game and went four innings, striking out 10 and issuing three walks.
For the Spartans, base hits went to Charla Echols (double), Kaitlyn Eveland and Lexi White. Alli Walker started the game and went 2.2 innings before being relieved by Leah Shipp, who pitched the final 1.1 innings. Each pitcher struck out one.
MSU has a midweek game on Wednesday against intra-state rival Oakland, then hosts Maryland next weekend in a three-game Big Ten series.
QUOTABLE
"Lessons are hard to learn sometimes – and as we had to in the non-conference portion of the season, we have to learn from unfortunate outcomes. We are still working on a lot of things and I think we have so much potential – but getting into the Big Ten and learning how to handle a three-game series against the same batters, the same pitchers – there's still a lot for our team to learn. All we can ask is to continue to work to get better – and I believe that we will with this young team. Its just a situation where we have to go back to work and look forward to our game against Oakland on Wednesday ."
