Winkler Scores Upset for Men's Tennis in 5-2 Loss at Notre Dame

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team traveled to South Bend, Indiana on Friday where they were defeated by No. 13-ranked Notre Dame, 5-2, from the Eck Tennis Pavillion.
With a loss the Spartans now hold a 5-9 record in the dual meet season while Notre Dame gets off a five match losing streak to improve to 9-6.
Notre Dame secured the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead over the Spartans. The pairing of William Howells and Axel Nefve defeated seniors Ivan Rakic and Billy Shisler 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Fighting Irish picked up their second doubles win at No. 2 with the duo of Lebedev and Matt Gamble defeating sophomore Jack Winkler and freshman Nick Williams in a hard-fought 7-5 set.
Freshman Carson Gates was the first Spartan to pick up a victory on Friday, breaking out of a three-match slump to defeat Nathan Griffin in No. 6 singles (7-6, 6-0). Gates is now 6-7 in the dual season and 1-0 at No. 6.
Winkler stole the show for the Spartans, earning an upset victory at No. 1 singles with a (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) victory over No. 15-ranked singles player Alex Lebedev. With a win on Friday, Winkler snaps out of a four match losing-skid and improves his season record to 7-5 in dual and 15-8 overall.
The Spartans are back in action at home on Sunday, March 10 when they will face No. 43 ranked Drake University at 5:00 p.m. ET. Drake is 11-4 on the year and have won four straight matches. The Bulldogs are in action four times prior to meeting the Spartans in what will be a busy week of action for them.
