ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State had success in the Fall with several student-athletes showing signs of improvement heading into 2019. Sophomore Jack Winkler was the team's Fall wins leader with eight and held an 8-2 record over his last ten matches. Ivan Rakic, Billy Shisler and John Carlin each recorded four wins for the Spartans with Colin Harvey picking up three.
Through 14 dual matches the Spartans are led in singles by No. 1 Jack Winkler with a 7-5 record and No. 6 Anthony Pero who is 7-6 in his first year as a Spartan. Winkler leads the team in overall season wins with 15. Pero is 7-2 at No. 6 singles, but has dropped matches at No. 4 and No. 5.
Freshman Carson Gates is third on the team in dual meet victories with six (6-7) while freshman Nick Williams has four (4-6). Winkler is the team's win leader in doubles with four, winning twice with Carlin and Williams.
At No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, the Spartans have compiled an 21-16 dual meet record. Overall, the Spartans are 30-52 in singles matches.
JACK WINKLER IN THE RANKINGS
Fresh off of a (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) victory over then No. 15-ranked Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame last weekend, sophomore Jack Winkler has entered the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Tennis singles rankings. Winkler's debut in the rankings is at No. 91 while Lebedev dropped to No. 17 this week.
ABOUT DRAKE
Drake was ranked No. 43 in the Oracle/ITA Top 50 National Team Rankings for February 26, but a pair of losses to Wichita State (4-2) and Minnesota (6-1) took Drake out of the March 5 edition of the rankings. The Bulldogs were 11-4 prior to meeting that pair of ranked opponents, with other losses coming to ranked Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and Oregon teams.
No. 57 Vinny Gillespie and No. 78 Tom Hands lead the Bulldog singles contingent. Gillespie is 11-4 at No. 1 singles for the season and Hands is 8-2 at No. 2. Hands also holds records of 3-1 at No. 3 and 1-0 at No. 4 singles. The doubles combo of Gillespie and Barny Thorold is currently ranked No. 52 by the ITA with a 7-5 record.
COACH ORLANDO'S THOUGHTS
"The Spartans are playing some of our best tennis of the season right now. We have had a great week of spring break training and are ready to play a very good Drake team."
