Spartans Bested by Memphis, 7-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's tennis concluded it's first day in the Volunteer State on Friday, February 8, falling to Memphis by a final tally of 7-0.
With a loss the Spartans fall to 5-5 on the season heading into Sunday's tilt with Vanderbilt in the Music City.
In doubles play, the Tigers claimed the first match with a 6-1 win from Matt Story and Jeremy Taylor over sophomore John Carlin and freshman Anthony Pero. Memphis' Jan Pallares and Patrick Sydow clinched the doubles point for the Tigers at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-1 over sophomore Jack Winkler and freshman Nick Williams.
At No. 3 singles, Memphis quickly took a 2-0 lead over the Spartans as Story defeated senior Billy Shisler in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Carson Gates was the next to fall, as David Stevenson best him at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
Pallares clinched victory for the Tigers at No. 2 singles, defeating Carlin 6-2, 6-4 in the third singles match to conclude. Williams was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Oscar Cutting at No. 5. Winkler was defeated in a close contest at No. 1 singles, heading to tiebreakers in the second set following a 6-3 first.
Pero took his match to a third set at No. 6 singles, winning the second set 6-1 after dropping the first by the same score. Ultimately, Pero was defeated 6-3 in the third to give Memphis the 7-0 victory.
Michigan State is back in action on Sunday, February 10 when they will take on Vanderbilty University at 1:00 pm ET. Spartan fans can watch all of Sunday's matches here.
