Men's Tennis Topped By Commodores, 6-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's tennis concluded its trip to the Volunteer State on Sunday, February 10, coming up short against Vanderbilt by a final tally of 6-1.
The Spartans fall to 5-6 on the season with a loss while Vanderbilt's record improves to 6-2 overall in the dual meet season.
In doubles play, the Commodores claimed the first match with a 6-3 win from Cameron Klinger and Maxwell Freeman over seniors Billy Shisler and Ivan Rakic at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, the Spartans evened things up with a 6-4 win for sophomore Jack Winkler and freshman Nick Williams. MSU dropped the doubles point following a close 7-5 match at No. 3 doubles that favored Billy Rowe and George Harwell, who defeated MSU sophomore John Carlin and freshman Anthony Pero.
Playing at No. 5 singles for the first time this season, Pero was on the losing end of a 6-1, 6-2 match against Rowe, giving Vanderbilt the 2-0 lead.
Vanderbilt followed things up with wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Carlin was defeated by Harwell, 6-4, 6-1 while freshman Carson Gates fell to Macsen Sisam by a final tally of 6-4, 6-3.
Rakic was the Spartans lone singles winner on Sunday, getting revenge over Freeman at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Winkler fell at No. 1 singles in a three-set match against Klinger. Klinger took the first set, 6-3, but Winkler fought back to even the sets at 1-1 with a 6-4 win in the second. Set three needed extra time to finish the closely contested match, but it was Klinger who came away on top, 10-7, in the third.
In the final match of the afternoon, Williams lost to Marcus Ferreira, 8-2, at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans have a 12 day lay-off until their next match on Friday, February 22 against Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. First serve that day will be at 1:00 p.m. ET
