EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team fell to intrastate rival Western Michigan on Friday afternoon by a final tally of 7-0 from the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The Spartans are now 2-3 in their last five matches and their record falls to 5-7 in the dual meet season. Western Michigan is now 6-6 in the dual meet season and remains undefeated at home.
"A tough loss for the Spartans," said Michigan State head coach Gene Orlando. " We were unable to take advantage of the opportunities when they presented themselves and Western Michigan capitalized. WMU is a good team, but we can play better than we did."
Western Michigan took the doubles point from the Spartans taking 6-3 and 6-2 sets over the Spartans No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams.
On the singles side, Michigan State found themselves in a number of close sets, losing the tiebreaker on four occasions. Sophomore Jack Winkler dropped a 7-6 (10-8) second set to fall to Jannik Opitz at No. 1 singles and sophomore John Carlin was defeated 7-6 (8-6) in his first set against Lenhard Haupt at No. 3.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Carson Gates lost 7-6 (7-5) in his first set against Peter Kuszynski. Freshman Nick Williams came away victorious in his first set, 6-4, but lost a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker in the third set to finish off the sweep for Western Michigan.
