EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team fell to No. 14 Michigan, 6-1, Wednesday night at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in the Big Ten opener.
Freshman Nick Williams earned MSU's point with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Kristofer Siimar at No. 5 singles.
"I thought the guys played hard and we had a great crowd," said MSU head coach Gene Orlando. "I definitely feel like there's a lot to build from. I really feel like we're close to turning the corner.
"The bright spot was Nick Williams winning at No. 5 as a true freshman. He's really made some great strides in his game the last couple of weeks, so we're excited about that.
"Overall, even though we lost, I can see the improvement in the guys. We're a young team and we're going in the right direction, and that's what it's all about. It about getting better every time we go out and play."
The Wolverines (8-2) took the doubles point to start the dual, then opened singles play by winning at No. 6 singles. Williams finished second with his victory in the fifth spot to close the gap to 2-1, but Michigan claimed wins in the remaining singles matches to make the final 6-1.
The Spartans (5-8) return to action Friday, March 1 at Notre Dame, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
