Arundell, Keener Lead Spartans Past Ohio

EAST LANSING, Mich. –Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Arundell collected double-digit saves for the fourth game in a row as the Spartans knocked off Ohio, 1-0, on a rainy Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.
Arundell, who started in her 34th-consecutive game, grabbed 10 saves on the day for MSU, while freshman Nienke Bloemsaat recorded her fourth defensive save of the year. Senior Kelsey Keener's tip-in goal in the 10th minute proved to be the decider for the Spartans.
The Spartans collected eight shots and four penalty corners, while Ohio grabbed 18 shots on six corners. Offensively, seven different Spartans recorded a shot and Keener added her first goal of the season with assists from sophomore Aisha Osinga and Bloemsaat.
"I think coming off our road swing, we just needed to get back to playing our own game and focusing on possession and moving the ball as a team together," said head coach Helen Knull. "I thought in the first half, we did that well. Second half, we kind of strayed from that a little bit. I think we played a little reactive. We were playing not to lose instead of playing to win. I thought that Maggie Cole today was really an offensive spark for us, stepping up to the ball and generating a lot of attack."
The Spartans got things going early with Keener's goal near the 10-minute mark of the first quarter. After Keener inserted the ball for the Spartans on a penalty corner, the ball was passed around in the circle and tipped in by Keener to put the Spartans up 1-0. The rest of the match proved to be a gritty performance by the Spartans, holding off numerous Ohio opportunities with excellent efforts on the defensive side.
Bloemsaat, who has started all 12 games this year for MSU, recorded her fourth defensive save of the year on a scuffle in the circle. Sophomore Maddie McDonough was awarded her first defensive save of the season after saving the Spartans on a shot at the left side of the cage. Arundell used everything she had to rally the Spartans to the win, laying out for saves on multiple occasions. Arundell pushed her save total to over 100 in just 12 games while tallying her third shutout of the season.
The Spartans move to 6-6 on the season and hit the road for a matchup with No. 20 Wake Forest on Sunday in Winstom-Salem. Gametime is slated for 12 p.m.
