Spartans Fall to No. 20 Wake Forest in Rainy Winston-Salem

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 20 Wake Forest on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem.Â
MSU finished with 10 shots and six corners, while Wake Forest mustered 27 shots on eight corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Arundell tallied six saves in the contest. Sophomore Aisha Osinga tallied her fourth goal of the season late in the fourth quarter for the Spartans. Senior Makenzie Brown and Osinga reeled off three shots apiece. Sophomore Maddie McDonough recorded her second defensive save of the year for MSU.
The Demon Deacons got on the board first near the 13-minute mark with a goal from Laia Vancells off a Meike Lanckohr assist near the left side of the circle.Â
Tied at one at after two quarters, the Spartans came out with intensity on the offensive end in the third quarter, outshooting Wake Forest 7-6 in large part by the playmaking ability of freshman midfielder Merel Hanssen. Hanssen created MSU's first three penalty corners after beating her defenders on numerous occasions. MSU tallied four corners in the third to just two for Wake Forest.
Wake Forest pushed its lead to 2-0 at the 34th minute with a goal from Maggie Dickman. The Demon Deacons collected 10 shots in the fourth, and added a goal off a rebound at the 47th minute from Kelsey Gill.
The Spartans continued to battle and after collecting their seventh penalty corner, reeled off a goal at the 56th minute. Osinga, who entered the game with three goals on the season, rebounded her own shot and used a lob approach over the goalkeeper who was out of position to cut the deficit to two.Â
MSU falls to 6-7 on the season and will look to rebound this Friday, Oct. 18 when they play host to Penn State at Ralph Young Field for Senior Day. Gametime is slated for 3 p.m.
