EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team battled through a full nine matches against Cal Poly on Sunday, January 20, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Mustangs by a 4-3 final tally.
With a loss, MSU now holds a 3-2 record this season while Cal Poly improves to 2-1.
Despite a win by sophomore Jack Winkler and John Carlin at No. 1 singles (6-4), the Spartans dropped the doubles point, losing to the Mustangs at No. 2 and No. 3. Senior Billy Shisler and freshman Nick Williams brought the tally at No. 3 back to 5-5 despite trailing 3-1 early, but eventually dropped to Cal Poly, 7-5.
Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead over Michigan State with a win over senior Ivan Rakic at No. 3 singles. Michigan State started to mount a comeback starting at No. 2 singles as Carlin earned a quick 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cal Poly's Dom Becherd. Freshman Anthony Pero tied the dual match up at 2-2 with a win of his own at No. 6 singles, his fourth win of the season.
Winker improved to 4-1 at No. 1 singles in the dual season and Michigan State a 3-2 overall lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the top. With the Spartans up 3-2, this left just Gates and Williams to try and close things out. Williams dropped a close 7-5 second set as Cal Poly tied the dual up at 3-3.
After winning a 6-4 second set, Gates trailed 5-2 in the third before battling back to a 5-4 deficit. Ultimately Gates would fall, 6-4, in the third to end the match.
