East Lansing, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team completed the opening weekend of their fall tournament season, competing at the Ivy-Plus Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey and the Western Michigan/Vredevelt Invite in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
"Great start to the fall season," MSU head coach Gene Orlando said. "Our goal was to get a lot of matches against quality players and work on developing our games though competition under pressure. That mission was accomplished as we left both competition sites as better players and a better team. Continual improvement is our theme."
Senior Ivan Rakic started his weekend strong, defeating Notre Dame's Conor Somers (6-4, 6-3) in round one before defeating Butler's Sam Sullivan (6-3, 6-3) in round two of Flight H. Rakic fell to Cameron Peterson of Illinois State in a close finals match, winning the second set 7-6, but ultimately fell to set three 12-10.
Senior Billy Shisler had similar results at WMU, defeating Illinois State's Zacharias Rasmusson (7-5, 6-4) and Butler's Ryan Roegner (6-3, 6-4). Shisler fell to Valporaiso's Franklin Brozovich in two sets (6-2, 6-1).
The duo of Rakic and Shisler fell to Western Michigan's Jack Randall and Kennosuke Nouchi in doubles action (6-3).
Sophomore Jack Winkler won three singles matches at the Ivy-Plus, defeating Wisconsin's Martim Vilela (7-5, 6-7, 10-2), Brown's Ching Lam (6-7, 6-3, 10-8) and Penn's Max Cancilla (7-6, 6-3).
Sophomore Davis Wong defeated Nebraska's Chris Dean (6-4, 7-5) to open his tournament.
Winkler and Wong fell to Dartmouth's Peter Conklin and Casey Ross in the first round of doubles play, but bounced back to win the lower half of the bracket with a 6-3 victory over LSU's Nick Watson and Daniel Moreno.
"Jack and Davis' doubles skills really compliment each other's game," Orlando said. "Their experience playing together in the juniors adds a unique dimension and a deeper comraderie."
The men's tennis team is off from competition until October 5 when they head to the Notre Dame invite in South Bend, Indiana.
