Winkler Named to All-Tournament Team at Bobby Bayliss Invite

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Sophomore Jack Winkler was named to the All-Tournament team at the Bobby Bayliss Invite hosted by Notre Dame University at the Eck Tennis Pavillion this past weekend. Winkler was 3-1 in singles play over the weekend and alongside sophomore John Carlin, finished 3-0 in doubles action.
Including Michigan State, eight teams competed in the tournament featuring Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Marquette, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Western Michigan. Michigan State. Five Spartans competed at the event, including Winkler, Carlin, senior Colin Harvey, senior Billy Shisler and senior Ivan Rakic.
Winkler, Harvey and Rakic each had strong starts to their tournament, winning their first matches on day one. Rakic scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Western Michigan's Kris Knof. Harvey had a hard-fought three set match with Nebraska's Jon Meyer in which he dropped the first set 7-5, but rallied back to win 6-0 in set to and earned a 1-0 (9) victory in the tiebreaker. Winkler Dropped his first set to Fabien Salle of Louisville, but came back 6-4 in set two and won 1-0 (6) in the tiebreaker.
Carlin and Winkler went 2-0 in doubles on day one, winning 6-4 over Nikita Snezkho and Oliver Okonkwo of Iowa and 7-5 over Eric Olivarez and Nick Schobel of Western Michigan.
Winkler dropped his only match of the weekend on day two, losing his opener in three sets to Lenhard Haupt of Western Michigan (6-2, 5-7, 1-0(5)). He later bounced back to defeat Johnathan Small of Notre Dame in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Shisler picked up his first win of the weekend on Saturday defeating Marquette's Robinson in three sets. The senior from Naples, Florida fell in set one, 6-3, but came back to win set two 6-4 and earned the win in the tiebreaker 1-0 (6). Harvey picked up a day two singles win over Conor Somers of Notre Dame, winning set one 7-6 and winning the tiebreaker 1-0 (4).
On day three, Winkler and Carlin wrapped up an undefeated run in doubles, defeating Salle and Clement Filho of Louisville 6-4.
Rakic, Shisler and Winkler each picked up wins for the Spartans on day three.
Shisler took our WMU's Knof in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Winkler defeated Grayson Broadus of Notre Dame, 6-3, 6-1. Rakic defeated Andrew Mariados of Notre Dame 6-2, 7-5 to finish his tournament 2-2. All three MSU seniors (Harvey, Shisler, Rakic) finished with two singles wins apiece on the weekend, while Winkler was 3-1 en route to an All-Tournament team nod.
