Competition Comes to Close for Spartans at ITA Midwest Regional

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Competition came to a close for Michigan State at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Saturday, October 20, as the final member of the team was eliminated from the tournament. Sophomore John Carlin was the lone Spartan to advance to the main draw of singles competition.
After a stellar performance in the qualifying draw, Carlin was eliminated by Richard Ciamarra of Notre Dame in the main draw (6-3, 6-1) on Saturday. Carlin bounced back at the ITA after a disappointing 0-4 record at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational a week prior.
Carlin opened his tournament with singles wins over Notre Dame's Conor Somers (6-2, 7-5), Illinois-Chicago's Niko Wasilewicz (6-4, 7-5) and Northern Illinois' Victor Spolidorio (6-2, 0-6, 6-3).
In doubles, Carlin and sophomore Jack Winkler won their first round doubles match, defeating Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar of DePaul (8-7). Carlin and Winkler were later eliminated by Michigan's Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar in the Round of 32 (8-1).
Winkler earned two victories in the singles qualifying draw, defeating Michigan's Harrison Brown (6-2, 7-6) and Northern Illinois' Shao-Yu Yu (6-3, 6-3) before being eliminated just one round away from the main draw by Marquette's Luis Heredia Gomez (6-4, 6-3).
Senior Colin Harvey was defeated by Brandon Shanklin of Marquette (6-1, 6-0) in the first round of qualifying action.
20-team's competed in the tournament, which featured conference opponents in Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Northwestern and Wisconsin, in addition to Chicago State, Detroit Mercy, Illinois State, Notre Dame, Valparaiso, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Cleveland State, Marquette, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, DePaul, Illinois-Chicago, Toledo and Youngstown State.
Michigan State will next compete at the 2018 Big Ten Indoor Championships which take place Friday, October 26 through Monday, October 29.
