Carlin, Winkler, Harvey Competing at ITA Midwest Regionals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team is set to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships. The tournament will run from Thursday, Oct. 18 to Monday, Oct. 22 in Notre Dame, Indiana at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Play will also be spread out to the Lakeland Athletic Club in Niles, Michigan.
After Wednesday night's qualifiers were canceled, the qualifying round will begin on Thursday, Oct. 18, with the main draw doubles following on Friday, Oct. 19 and main draw singles on Saturday, Oct. 20. Singles and doubles play will each continue on Oct. 21 and 22 with the finals of each draw taking place on Monday, October 22.
The 20-team tournament will feature conference opponents in Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Northwestern and Wisconsin, in addition to Chicago State, Detroit Mercy, Illinois State, Notre Dame, Valparaiso, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Cleveland State, Marquette, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, DePaul, Illinois-Chicago, Toledo and Youngstown State.
Three Spartans will represent MSU at the ITA Midwest Regionals, including senior Colin Harvey and sophomore's Jack Winkler and John Carlin. Winkler and Carlin will also participate in the doubles draw starting on Oct. 19.
In qualifying singles, Harvey will face Brandon Shanklin of Marquette, Carlin will face Conor Somers of Notre Dame and Winkler will face Harry Brown. Winkler and Carlin are seeded No. 12 and No. 14 respectively. Somers is a common opponents for the Spartans in 2018 thus far with Harvey and senior Ivan Rakic already facing, and defeating him in prior tournaments.
A trip to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships is on the line, as the champions of each main draw (singles and doubles) will receive automatic berths into the tournament, which is held in Arizona next month.
