Higgins Tallies Career First in Loss to Cardinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 9-ranked Louisville by a final score of 4-1 in non-conference action on Sunday, October 7 from Trager Stadium.
With a loss the Spartans fell to 4-11 on the season. Louisville improved to 10-3 overall. Michigan State has one non-conference game remaining on their schedule, the regular season finale against Miami (Ohio) on October 21.
MSU was out-shot 12-4 in total shots and 9-2 in shots on goal. Louisville held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities, and scored on two of them. Louisville's final two goals of the contest came on second-chances following a penalty corner shot.
Michigan State's defense held Louisville to no shots in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell made five saves for Michigan State on 12 shots faced. Three Cardinal shots fell wide of goal. Louisville utilized a pair of goalkeepers with Hollyn Barr conceding the second-half goal to MSU.
All of Louisville's offense came in one short burst during the first half as the Cardinals scored four goals in a seven minute stretch. Bethany Russ got things started for Louisville, scoring her seventh goal of the season on a 21st minute penalty corner. Taylor Stone and Biz Allgeier scored in the 23rd and 27th minutes resepctively. Erica Cooper capped off the Cardinal scoring effort with her eight goal of the season, scoring on a second chance shot following a 28th minute penalty corner.
Senior Bailey Higgins put the Spartans on the board in the 56th minute, scoring on a rebound after a shot by freshman Isa van der Weij was saved. Higgins' goal was the first of her career in 71 games played.

Michigan State is set for their final home game of the season on Friday October 12, 2018. The Spartans will take on inter-state rival No. 6-ranked Michigan who enters the game with a 9-5 record. Friday's game will be streamed on BTN2Go and admission at Ralph Young Field is free.
