OXFORD, Ohio - Redshirt sophomore Elizabeth Helffrich scored the game-winning goal against Miami on Sunday in Michigan State field hockey's 2-1 victory. The Spartans improve to 2-4 this season with the win. Freshman Alli Helwig also contributed a goal for MSU.
"It was great to see the team come away with two wins this weekend," commented head coach Helen Knull. "As a group we are growing and need to continue to improve on a daily and weekly basis. It was great to see Alli Helwig and Lizzie Helffrich both get goals today, proving that we have a deep line of players who can finish for us."
All the scoring in the match took place in the first half of play and began with Helwig's goal at 21:42. The freshman notched her first goal of her career off of a rebound during a corner play. Olivia Miller answered for the Redhawks at 27:40 when she collected the ball and scored on a breakaway.
Helffrich scored her second goal of the weekend four minutes later off of a pass from senior Holly Sherman in the middle of the circle. The Spartans edged the Redhawks in shots, 10-8 and in corners, 5-3. Goaltender redshirt sophomore Molly Cassidy tallied four saves in the victory.
The Spartans are back in action next week traveling to Providence, RI to take on Maine and Providence. The match against Maine will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17th at 2 p.m. and MSU will play Providence on Sunday, Sept. 18th at 2 p.m.
