PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Michigan State field hockey team (2-5) dropped its match to Maine by a 4-1 decision. Senior back Angie Lucik scored the lone goal for the Spartans in the loss. Redshirt sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy ended the contest with a total of six saves.
"Today the Spartans played a strong first half," commented head coach Helen Knull. "In the second half, we let Maine control the game and they took advantage of our let down. Tomorrow we have another opportunity to clean up our game and compete in the Green and White."
Lucik was the first to score in the game, tallying her goal 5:52 into the game. Redshirt junior Chelsy Coil was credited with the assist. Maine's Leslie Sacre tied up the score at 31:21 when she converted on her penalty shot.
The Blackbears tallied three more goals after the penalty shot. Sacre scored again ten minutes into the second half off of a penalty play. Stephanie Gardnier deflected a ball into the cage at 53:09 off of a pass from Kelly Newton. Courtney Glynn wrapped up the Black Bears' scoring drive at 59:28 after tapping in a pass past Cassidy.
Maine topped the Spartans in both corners, 8-3, and shots, 12-7. MSU returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 18th, at 2 p.m. against Providence.
