
Softball Falls to Iowa, 7-6

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State softball team (13-17, 0-2 Big Ten), in its second Big Ten game of the season, was unable to hold on to a 6-4 lead as it fell to Iowa (15-12-1, 2-0 Big Ten) on Sunday, March 28, 7-6. Junior Jessica Bracamonte led the Spartans offensively going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the sixth, Iowa responded with a two-run inning. The Hawkeyes used back-to-back RBIs from Chelsey Carmody and Liz Watkins. Carmody recoded a single up the middle to score Lindsey Dingman, while Watkins hit a double to bring in Carmody. The two runs brought the score to 7-6.
Iowa got the score in the top of the first with a three-run inning. However, the Spartans responded with a run themselves. After another Hawkeye run was scored in the top of the second, MSU responded with a five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead 6-4.
Sophomore Lauren Kramer got the scoring started in the second when she hit a single to score senior Kelly Confer and sophomore Ali Grant. Bracamonte capped of the inning with a three-run blast to deep left.
The Hawkeyes pulled within one in the top of the third when Johnnie Dowling singled to score Sam Valentine, making the game 6-5.
Chelsea Lyon earned the win for Iowa to improve to 7-6 on the year. Kramer was the pitcher of record for MSU, falling to 9-8.
MSU will host its fourth-consecutive home game when Eastern Michigan travels to Old College Field on Tuesday, March 30. The Eagles will battle the Spartans beginning at 4 p.m.
