EAST LANSING, Mich. - On a soggy afternoon, the Michigan State field hockey team moved its record to 4-0 against MAC teams with a 4-1 win over Ohio Sunday (Sept. 28). Juniors Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, The Netherlands) and Veerle Goudswaard (Houten, The Netherlands) notched two goals apiece. It was the second straight game in which Goudswaard scored twice. The Spartans took the victory despite an arduous week of travel, returning from Indiana early Saturday morning.
"You can always make excuses for poor performances but I refuse to do that," said head coach Michele Madison. "I think we should expect more out of ourselves individually and as a team because we're capable of playing better than we did today."
Play began under a steady rainfall that seemed to slow down both teams. Once the skies cleared, Michigan State (7-3 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) got the scoring started as Beerman connected at 15:59 just as she entered the game to take the lead over Ohio (2-6 overall, 0-1 MAC). Goudswaard scored the eventual game winner six minutes later to conclude first half scoring.
Goudswaard added some more insurance in the second half at 37:43 with her seventh goal of the season and fourth in two games. The Bobcats would not go away, though, as Chelsea Mearig put them on the board at 45:30 ruining the shot of a second straight MSU shutout. Beerman put the game away with her sixth goal of the season at the 53:13 mark for the 4-1 State win.
The Spartans edged the Bobcats 8-7 in shots on goal and 8-5 in penalty corners.
Michigan State returns to the field this weekend for a Big Ten battle when the Spartans host Northwestern Friday (Oct. 3) at 4 p.m., and a non-conference meeting with Stanford Saturday (Oct. 4) at 3:30 p.m., coinciding with MSU Homecoming festivities.
