The Michigan State field hockey team drew its shutout streak to three games with a 5-0 victory over Syracuse at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge on Friday, Sept. 13, at Coyne Field on the campus of Syracuse University.
The Spartans, who are now 5-1 on the season, scored right off the bat with a goal from sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) at just 2:18 into the game. Beerman's seventh score of the season came off of a penalty corner, with assists from senior Vancouver, B.C., natives Julia Adams and Jenny Sanders.
Sophomore Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) knocked in her fourth goal of the year off a pass from fellow sophomore Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands) at the 23:58 mark, giving Michigan State a 2-0 halftime lead.
Beerman added an unassisted goal at the 38:23 mark to put the Spartans up by three to open the closing half of play. Sanders notched her first goal of the season, off a van Haeringen helper at 52:55 and freshman Michelle Huynh-Ba (Hockissin) secured her third goal of the year to close out the game.
MSU netminders Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) and Lauren Hess (Los Angeles, Calif.) shared duties between the pipes, but faced only two shots, as the Spartans outshot the Orangewomen, 25-2. Michigan State also held an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, Sept. 15, when they face the 2-3 Rutgers in the second day of the Big East/Big Ten Challenge in Syracuse, N.Y. The Scarlet Knights defeated Indiana 2-1 in overtime on Friday, Sept. 13.
