The Michigan State field hockey team put on an offensive show against Rutgers on Sunday, Sept. 15, defeating the Scarlet Knights, 12-1, at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge in Syracuse, N.Y. Seven different Spartans put the ball in the net and three others tallied at least one assist as Michigan State produced its best offensive performance since 1979.
Senior Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands) each tallied three goals for half of the Spartans' scoring, while freshman Michelle Huynh-Ba (Hockessin, Del.) scored a pair of goals.
Martin got the scoring frenzy started just over a minute into the match on an unassisted tally and was followed up by Huynh-Ba, putting MSU up 2-0 just 10 minutes in. Sophomore Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) claimed her fifth goal of the season at the 25:42 mark and Martin added her second of the game at 30:04. Sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) claimed her team-leading ninth goal of the year two minutes later off of a penalty corner pass from Martin and senior Jenny Sanders (Vancouver, Britich Columbia). Martin completed her first-half hat-trick with a pass from Beerman as the horn sounded to close the half with a 6-0 Spartan advantage.
Freshman Breanna Harpstead (Cheyney, Pa.) scored her first collegiate goal just over two minutes into the second half at 37:55, off of Beerman's second helper of the day. van Haeringen began her second-half hat trick five seconds later with a penalty corner goal from junior Alexandra Kyser (Columbus, Ohio) and Sanders. The trio teammed up again at 48:38 for van Haeringen's second goal. Senior Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored her second goal of the season, Huynh-Ba tallied her second of the day and van Haeringen completed her hat trick to round out the MSU scoring spree.
Rutgers got on the board in the 54th minute, for the first goal scored against the Spartans in over 297 minutes of action. MSU once again split action in goal, with sophomore Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) and junior Lauren Hess (Los Angeles, Calif.) sharing duties. Kirkaldy had one save in the opening half on the only shot she faced, while Hess made two saves on four shots.
The Spartans (6-1 overall) bring their six-game winning streak back to East Lansing, Mich., next weekend, when they face Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m.
